I am a big fan of roller derby. I skate recreationally and have huge admiration for those who play competitively. Here’s a quick summary of the game for those of you who don’t know it.
Roller derby is played on an oval track. There are 5 skaters from each team on the track at any one time. One of the players from each team is called the jammer and is the point scorer. You can tell that they are the jammer because they have a star on their helmet.
The jammer’s job is to get past the players from the other team.
If they can get past the opposing team’s players they quickly skate around the track.
The jammer then tries to get past the opposing team’s players again. For each player they pass they score a point. The team with the most points wins.
Roller derby is a highly assertive game with lots of skill and strategy. If you get a chance to go and see a local team then please do so. It will be fun and you’ll be supporting your local team.
